Whether you have a new puppy or are just looking for some grooming tips for your best friend, at Pinnacle Pet, we wanted to take some time to offer some pointers on how to keep your dog looking good!

1. Bathing

Bathing should be done semi-frequently, perhaps once or twice a month, depending on the type of coat your dog has. The reason to avoid washing too often is that it removes the natural oils that keep your dog’s coat shiny and healthy. We recommend using warm water (a little warmer than room temperature) and a gentle shampoo designed specifically for dogs when you bathe your dog.

2. Brushing

Brushing is the most frequent part of grooming that your dog requires. Depending on the type of coat your dog has, you may want to brush daily. Be sure to brush in the direction your dog’s coat grows and use an appropriate brush for their fur. A bristle brush is usually the best bet for short or medium coats. Pin brushes are the way to go for long coats.

3. Nail Clipping

Most pet dogs require regular nail clipping. This keeps your home and furniture safe, as well as making sure your dog will not get its nails caught on something and torn off. When clipping your dog’s nails, be sure to press on the pad of its toe and extend the nail. That makes it easier to avoid clipping too far. Avoid clipping into the part of the nail that starts to curve. Doing that risks cutting into the quick and causing discomfort and bleeding. Check out this fantastic nail clipping article on the AKC website for more details.

4. Teeth Brushing

When brushing your dog’s teeth, be sure to use a brush specifically designed for dogs. The bristles are softer and angled in an optimal way to fit your dog’s mouth. You should also use toothpaste approved for dogs. The paste is designed to taste good to them while only using safe cleaning compounds. When it comes to teeth brushing, the more, the merrier. Brushing up to several times a week is a great idea!
