As we approach the holiday season, many people begin to consider donating to charitable organizations. If that’s you, we applaud your generous spirit. However, there are some things to consider when deciding on a charity to which to donate. In this blog, we’ll go over our recommendations for local pet charities.
HSUS currently has a “D” rating from HumaneWatch.org. According to Humane Watch, HSUS only gives about 1% of its total revenue to animal shelters, something that has disgruntled many shelter operators that the Humane Society of the United States claims to support. HSUS also only receives a 2-star rating from Charity Navigator for questionable financials.
ASPCA only receives a “C” rating from Humane Watch due to its excessively high corporate salaries and only 41% of its budget going to help animals.
The number one thing we recommend doing is looking up any charity you plan to contribute to on Humane Watch before you do so. That will help you ensure that your money is going where it will do the most good.
At Pinnacle Pet, we recommend finding locally based charities that have a relationship to your community. When you give to a local charity, you know that your donation will benefit animals in your hometown or region. Plus, smaller charitable organizations tend to have smaller administrative costs, so a higher percentage of your contribution will go toward helping animals.
